Michelin Keys are the hotel equivalent to Michelin Stars.

If you're a traveler or a foodie, you have probably heard of the Michelin Star rating system given to restaurants. Now, Michelin is moving into the hotel world, announcing its first-ever Michelin Key rating system for hotels around the world.

While MICHELIN stars specifically rate the quality of a restaurant's food, the MICHELIN Recommended designation more broadly covers entire cities and countries to highlight local dining establishments. These fall under the brand, MICHELIN Guide, along with Bib Gourmands (more on that shortly).

Michelin stars are given out on a scale of one to three stars, with only the top establishments in the world qualifying. To earn one Michelin star, a restaurant needs to be “a very good restaurant in this category”. For two stars, it needs to be “excellent cooking, worth a detour”.

Fans of award-winning fine dining will feel at home at Four Seasons, whose 25 restaurants with Michelin stars across 20 Four Seasons hotels and resorts have 34 stars and counting – the most of any luxury hospitality brand – and a host of accolades from arbiters of excellence like Black Pearl and Gault&Millau.

The Michelin Star rating didn't take hold in the United States until 2005, and it began by concentrating solely on fine dining in New York City. Today, the Michelin Guide reviews restaurants in select U.S. cities, including Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and San Francisco.
